Essential Safety Guide

Essential Safety Rules

Transportation

Always use Grab

Use the Grab app for all transportation in Manila. Fares are fixed in advance and driver details are recorded, making it the safest and most reliable option.

Never take unlicensed taxis

Do not accept rides from strangers or unofficial drivers who approach you on the street. Always book through the Grab app or a hotel-arranged vehicle.

Avoid walking alone late at night

Especially after midnight, avoid walking solo. Travel in groups or book a Grab directly to your destination rather than walking between venues.

Drinks & Food

Never leave your drink unattended

Do not consume a drink that has been left unattended or out of your sight. Drink spiking, while rare, has been documented at lower-end venues.

Decline drinks from strangers

Politely decline drinks offered by people you do not know well. This is a standard safety precaution in any nightlife environment worldwide.

Drink responsibly

Excessive intoxication significantly impairs judgment and increases vulnerability. Set a personal limit and stick to it throughout the evening.

Valuables & Money

Leave valuables in your hotel safe

Passports, large amounts of cash, and unnecessary cards should be stored in your hotel's safety deposit box. Carry only what you need for the evening.

Withdraw cash during the day

Use ATMs in the daytime at well-lit, secure locations. Late-night ATM use carries unnecessary risk — plan ahead and carry enough cash for the evening.

Use front pockets or zipped bags

Keep your wallet and phone in front pockets or a zipped inner pocket. Avoid rear trouser pockets, which are easily accessed by pickpockets in crowded venues.

Emergency Preparedness

Save key emergency numbers

Keep these numbers saved: your hotel, Philippine National Police (117), and the Japanese Embassy (+63-2-8551-5710). Screenshot them in case of no signal.

Know your hotel name and address

Be able to clearly state your hotel's name and address in English. This is essential if you need police assistance or are disoriented after a long night.

Contact the embassy for serious incidents

For serious legal or medical emergencies, contact the Japanese Embassy in Manila immediately. A 24-hour emergency line is available for citizens abroad.

Scam Prevention

Common Scams to Avoid

Most Manila nightlife experiences are safe and enjoyable. However, being aware of common scams helps you avoid the small minority of bad actors.

HIGH RISK

Overcharging at Unlisted Venues

Some venues present inflated bills after drinks are consumed. Always confirm pricing from a physical menu before ordering. EVE NAVI-listed venues are vetted for pricing transparency.

MEDIUM RISK

Drink Spiking

Never leave your drink unattended. Do not accept drinks from strangers. If you feel unusually intoxicated, seek help from venue staff or call a trusted contact immediately.

HIGH RISK

Unlicensed Taxi Overcharging

Street taxis and unofficial drivers frequently overcharge tourists. Always use Grab — fares are fixed in advance and driver details are recorded. Never negotiate with drivers who approach you.

MEDIUM RISK

Fake Venue Staff / Touts

People outside venues may claim to be staff and offer "special deals." Always enter venues directly and deal only with staff inside. Ignore anyone who approaches you on the street.

LOW RISK

ATM Skimming

Use ATMs inside banks or shopping malls during daylight hours. Avoid standalone ATMs on the street, especially late at night. Cover your PIN when entering.

LOW RISK

Counterfeit Currency

Counterfeit Philippine Peso bills exist. Withdraw cash from official bank ATMs rather than money changers on the street. Check bills under light if unsure.
